Description
Once upon a time, back when Avatar: The Last Airbender started, I was just as willing to love Zutara just as much as I was willing to love Kataang. What can I say? I liked Zuko; I liked Katara. Naturally, I should have liked to see them together.
You wanna know what ruined that little fantasy?
You.
That's right, you—the desperate, obsessive little fangirls who live and would die for this ship.
It was cute for a while, just like the Twilight fad when it first came about in the underground. But then it got ridiculous, and here is why:
1. You practically force the ship down our throats. Seriously, I went on this forum that was all about Zutara, and all I could see was: "OMG, they're opposite elements—they belong together!" and sometimes, "It's canon, it's canon! You should love it because it's canon! Come look at all this bullshit evidence we found in the show" and etc. etc. And you wanna know what happened when Kataang was brought up?
"NO! Kataang is wrong! Down with Kataang!"
Which leads me to:
2. You make up bullshit excuses why Kataang shouldn't exist. To be quite honest, I'm not happy with the way Avatar ended with the Kataang kiss—I would have liked to have seen more development from Katara's side. But notice how that's not the major reason why Zutarans hate Kataang, at least as far as I've seen. Here are the excuses I've heard hundreds and hundreds of times:
"He's younger than her by two years! It's wrong!"
"He's too short for her!"
"He should be with Toph!"
Sometimes it's all three in the same post!
Here are my refutes, in order:
"He's younger than her by two years! It's wrong!"
I'm going to say this nice and slow, since you all seem too blind to have noticed it already: KATARA. IS. TWO. YEARS. YOUNGER. THAN. ZUKO! Seriously, the girl's fourteen; Zuko's sixteen! (Look on the fucking wiki, if you doubt it! The link for it is right here: [link])
If having a whole two years difference between Katara and Aang is "wrong", then you'd think it would go both ways with Zuko and Katara. But no: apparently, these fangirls are stuck with the belief that "as long as the guy is older, then the relationship is totally okay".
As much as I hate quoting internet memes, this just calls for it: LOL, wut?
Now, there's no problem with not liking a pairing because of an age difference—it's the hypocrisy that's the problem. It shouldn't matter if one of the two people is a male or female: if you have a problem with one or the other being the older partner, then it should go both ways with subsequent pairings with this pattern.
And here’s a little newsflash for you: the age difference between Katara and Aang is two years. I could probably understand this argument if there was, say, a ten year difference, but seriously—single digits, people! Single! In other words, does this couple really deserve such criticism? If so, then you might as well criticize Zutara for the same reason! If not…well, not only are you a hypocrite, you’re probably pretty sexist as well, since you’re pretty much perpetuating the idea that older women can’t be romantically involved with younger men—which is hilarious, considering that many of you are girls/young women who probably admire Katara for fighting against sexism. Another hypocrisy, perhaps?
Note: Yes, I know that these characters aren’t adults in the series, but that doesn’t mean they won’t become adults. Either way, this stigma against women still exists, and while older men have this stigma as well, it’s rarely condemned by the majority of the media. (Not that it should either, but I’d appreciate it if society was consistent with its prejudices, wouldn’t you?) In fact, a lot of relationships with older men and young women are still stigmatized, but mostly because “the girl’s just after his money, she doesn’t love him at all” which is obviously the case for all of these relationships (sarcasm).
But that’s an issue that can be discussed by any die-hard feminist (which I’m not) you meet on the street, if you have the patience and an open enough mind to listen. (There are sane, logical feminists out there, no doubt; but there are also the really fundamentalist types out there.)
Moving on:
"He's too short for her!"
So he’s short, what’s your point? My dad is shorter than my mom, and their relationship is actually successful. (In fact, not only is my dad short, he’s also an ex-Marine, and a retired police officer, who can still kick some ass.) Are you saying that I, as a young woman in college, can’t date a short guy, despite the fact there might chemistry between us? Granted, I have yet to meet a guy who’s shorter than me (I’m not even five feet), but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t date such a guy. Despite whatever shallow stigma you’ve grown up with in our loveable brainwashing society, these guys still have the capability of being just as “manly” (another gender issue that be discussed in another place, at another time) as the taller guys.
And not only that, but hello? Aang’s twelve years old; technically, he’s still going through puberty. In other words, while he’s not taller than Katara now, there’s still a possibility that he will get taller than her in the future—which will make this argument null and void.
And finally:
"He should be with Toph!"
Why? Who are you to say what is canon and what is not? Are you the creators? I mean, I don’t know about you, but even though this show isn’t perfect, I respect Konietzko and DiMartino enough to not try to force them to make the show as I want. It’s their show, their creation, their art—as fans, we should trust them to make decisions, as well as accept those decisions along the way.
(…Don’t look at me like that; handing the rights over to M. Night Shyamalan is a mistake anyone could have made. I’m sure they died inside just like the rest of us. Hopefully they’ll learn their lesson with Legend of Korra.)
As for the pairing itself, there’s nothing wrong with liking the pairing of Toph and Aang—but it’s pretty obvious that this pairing was just created by you fangirls just so Zutara could survive in your fanfiction with little or any complications. Just saying.
Now that that’s done, here’s the number three reason why I officially can’t like Zutara:
The “Zutara Evidence for the Intellectual Dummy” videos that are featured on YouTube.
I can’t tell if this is the work of a troll or not—but yeah, enough said. See, I’m not against fanon pairings, but when fangirls are desperate, not to mention rude and immature enough to try to convince themselves and everyone else, many who probably don’t want the “convincing” in the first place, of something that is obviously not there and will never be there—then the pairing is already ruined beyond any repair. (Which is why I’m not really into many of the pairings I used to like a few years ago…fucking fangirls)
Wow…I feel much better now after that little rant—but I still have something to say before I sign off.
Here’s a riddle for you: What’s the saddest part about the Zutara fandom?
Answer: There are probably a lot of Zutara fangirls who are polite, courteous—not to mention sane—enough to not deserve this criticism. (For that, I’m sorry that you came across this and that you were probably offended.) You could probably have a conversation with them about why you like Kataang, or whatever, and they will be respectful enough towards you to listen without casting any judgment on you or your "OTP." They probably also have enough dignity to admit their ship was defeated, but still love it anyway without being obsessive.
It’s just that they’re really, really, really, really difficult to find amongst the mass of the insanity.
Also, before I get any of the backlash I’m sure will come:
Once again, I do not hate the pairing Zutara. I just won’t ever search for any fanfictions or any fan art with this pairing, because—well, you crazy fangirls ruined it for before I could even grow to like it. Thanks a lot.
And as for the Kataangers I've come across (ha, you didn't think I'd addres you obsessive fangirls, did I?) stop shoving it in their faces. You're not just perpetuating the insanity, you're probably being just as bad as they are, even though your ship won with flying colors. And for those sane Kataangers who have the integrity not to, then I apologize to you too.

Note to readers:
Hello!
Since my track record for replying to other commenters, and thanking those who fave this hasn't been too good, I thought I would simplify things with this little note.
To start, thank you for all the comments! I'm sorry that I haven't been able to reply to each of you, even the occasional haters, or people-with-opinions-I-don't-really-agree-with. I wish that I could all give you the well thought out response you each deserve, but unfortunately, I have a life that prevents me from doing so 24/7. (I'm barely on this account anymore, to be quite honest.)
As for those who have faved this, I also tip off my hat to you, and I apologize for not saying my gratitude sooner. I wish I could go to each and every person's profile and drop in a typical, "Thanks for the fave! ", but, yeah, like I said: life.

Yes! Someone said it. I actually do ship Zutara, but only since I'm a multi-shipper and seriously the fans are soooo annoying.
